Clear Destinations

Robin Sharma wrote a book called “The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari” and in that book he talked about the importance of clarity. He used the example of an archery target and how we cannot hit a target we do not see. He expressed the importance of crystal-clear goals so we know we’re on track and to motivate us.

I was reminded of this concept this morning when I jumped on the treadmill. When I start my workouts, the first thing I do is look at my strain goal for the day. Then I get fired up and determine to not only hit that target but surpass it.

This morning, my performance band didn’t indicate my target strain. It was calculating the minutes, the calories, and my current strain but it didn’t register my goal. I’ll be honest, it threw me off. I need to have a crystal-clear goal in mind to get me pumped up. Chances are you do too.

The challenge is that most of us have vague goals. I know that prior to working with a coach, I had goals like “to be successful and happy” but didn’t attach any metrics to what that meant.

There’s extraordinary power in having clear goals because it helps us determine if we’re on track or off track. This is one of the reasons why I believe that age groups who were brought up in a time where everyone gets a participant trophy and you cannot fail a child at school will find it detrimental to overall happiness.

How fun is it to watch a hockey game without a score? It’s not. No one would watch it because it’s an absurd idea, and yet, we have allowed this vague, underachieving mindset to creep in to our school system and society.

To feel fully alive, charged up and excited, you must have a clear goal. This will provide you with clarity on where to spend your time. It will cause you to stretch each day because you can see progress. You can see that you’re becoming the person required to reach excellence. Without it, life is boring.

When you look at your own goals today, are they specific or vague? When you review those goals do they light you up, motivate you or even get you excited at all?

Give it as try. Revisit your goals for the year and determine how you will add next level clarity to each, with milestones along the way that you can celebrate. It’s one thing to say, “I will get healthy this year”.  It’s a completely different mission to be working towards “train like an athlete, lift 100lbs and have a 26-inch waist”. Total clarity, total game-changer!

Wishy-washy goals equal wishy-washy results. Absolute fire clarity and precision for your goal attainment equals outrageous motivation and a fully charged life!
