The mind is such a powerful force! I recently listened to an Ed Mylett podcast with Trevor Moawad. They talked about just how powerful our minds are and what we feed it matters a whole lot! They talked about the science behind our words and how much power we give our words. When we talk, our brain goes to work to close the gap and make our words our reality!
They shared two powerful stories which I will leave to you to hear about here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yzIXv9XY7Q as it’s definitely worth the time. Your mind will be BLOWN when you hear about someone who lost a championship by self-prophesying defeat and someone who DIED because their negative beliefs took over!
I used to really struggle with negative self-talk. For me, my struggle was body shaming. I used to remind myself several hundred times a day how awful I looked. I spent time in therapy bringing awareness to this toxicity and have released something that once had a powerful grip on me. My therapist had me get a little notebook and write down each time I had a negative thought about my body. I was to timestamp it to recognize the frequency. It brought me to tears. I remember sitting at my desk and pulling out my little notebook for the hundredth time that day and I was flabbergasted! I was averaging these self-deprecating thoughts and voices every 3 minutes!
It starts with an awareness of just how many times you speak negatively about yourself or hold yourself back. Perhaps this rings a bell…
We’ve all done it and we need to regain control and take our power back.
I’ve replaced the negative with empowering words and affirmations but what’s most important is I’ve backed up my intentions and beliefs with behaviours!
Whenever those thoughts creep in, I call them out! That’s right! I say, “Thanks but no thanks.” For instance, I’ve been working on an awesome health regime for some time. I caught myself in the shower a few months ago questioning the sustainability of it all. “Can you really keep this up Nikki”? For a split second I almost relinquished control to that negative thinking. Instead, I recognized it and replaced it with. “Of course, this is sustainable. Health and nutrition are incredibly important to me and I will continue to make this a priority.”
A change in behaviour is also required because our brains are great BS detectors! If I say I’m an athlete but eat Cheetos and drink wine each night I’m not fooling my body. The power comes when we change our thoughts about ourselves and then behave in a way that reflects the person we’re striving to become! When we become congruent with who we want to be and take action, that is alignment with those beliefs and our body follows suit!
I used to spend time thinking about what I didn’t want. I didn’t want to put the weight back on. I didn’t want to have a meeting go poorly. Instead, I’ve learned the value in visualizing your ideal outcomes and in great detail!
Now I visualize a healthy, strong body not only now but how I want to be when I’m in my sixties and seventies. Someone who is vivacious, energetic, and exciting to be around. I set intentions for each day and remind myself of the positive attributes and discipline that I need to make this a reality.
My hope for you is that if you struggle with negative thinking that is holding you back, that you bring awareness to it. You’re intentional about changing the trajectory of your life and you back it up with visualizing your best self and behaving in congruence with the best of who you were meant to be!
As always, please share any awesome mind-hacks that you have found have helped with negativity!
